The
presence of a woman or housemother within our chapter completes
the family of Alpha Gamma Rho. Jan Brown is this woman as
she capably serves as our "mom away from home."
Little did she know as a child attending Founders' Day with
her father and family that she would someday be the housemother
for the same chapter that he was initiated into. She is a
strong supporter of the fraternity as she has also had 2 brothers
and 3 nephews who have gained from the AGR experience. Through
her family associations with AGRs, she is well aware of the
long-term benefits of this fraternity.
Our AGR mom is a fantastic resource
person as she brings us on board with appropriate manners/dress
for social and professional situations. She helps with proof
reading assignments and resumes and enjoys keeping up on the
special interests of brothers in the fraternity. She is always
willing to be a good listener and manages to have suggestions
for our many questions. When it is time to publish the chapter
publication for our 1800+ alumni, Jan even spends time updating
her own column within the newsletter specifically geared for
the AGR alum. When asked to, she even tackles the job of teaching
college men the difficult task of ironing a shirt or sewing
a button. In fact, every now and then, she will even do it
for us!
Mom serves as a gracious hostess
for such occasions as Founders' Day, Homecoming and Parent
Weekends, etc. at the chapter house. She may be seen working
with our cook, setting up for the occasion, greeting guests,
and reminiscing with "her" former young men when
they return as alumni. Like a real mother, she is willing
to lend a helping hand so that we enjoy a warm and comfortable
home away from home.
Home at 201 Gray is more than
a place to hang our hats! Mom Brown helps provide that warm
caring atmosphere and the expectations to respect others and
our chapter facility. Life is better with Jan around, and
we are better men because of her presence.
